Longstitch Binding Workshop

October 21, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

£30
Longstitch Binding Feature Image

This longstitch binding workshop teaches a traditional method of binding that originates from Germany and dates back to the late 14th C. In this method, sections of parchment or paper were sewn directly through holes in the covering material, giving support to the spine, and flexibility to the book.

In this workshop we will create longstitch bindings using a variety of paper and leather, with different options in closing mechanisms.

We will cover

  • the importance of grain direction
  • folding and cutting paper
  • sewing through sections into leather
  • creating a binding

You will come away with

  • an A6 hand made leather binding

I will provide all tools and materials for this binding. Both tools and material will be purchasable during the course if you would like to take any home with you to make more bindings.
